Great Wall Motor was founded in 1976 in the city of Baoding, which is located in the province of Hebei (Baoding, Hebei, China), where its head office is still located. Meanwhile, for a long time the company worked exclusively on the domestic market. The first export delivery occurred on October 12, 1997. Since then, Great Wall cars have been sold in many countries around the world, including Russia, the USA and Western Europe. They are especially popular in Africa and South America. GWM production volumes have long been in the hundreds of thousands of cars per year.

Today, crossovers, SUVs, pickups, limousines, sedans, as well as buses and special equipment roll off the assembly line of the company's factories. The company does not stop there, and, in addition to more than 10 factories and design centers included in the holding, continues to increase production capacity. One of the results of this activity was a new production complex with a total area of about 1.8 million sq.m. This made it possible to gradually increase production volume, and by the end of 2007 it was increased to 800 thousand cars.

From January to December 2006, Great Wall sold 45,980 pickup trucks of various models, taking first place in terms of sales of vehicles of this type in the Chinese market and securing a share of more than 30% of this segment (a total of 145,836 pickup trucks were sold in China in 2006 - this is the fourth largest pickup truck market after the USA, Thailand and Canada) Two years earlier, in October 2004, the official Russian representative office of Great Wall Motors Ltd. opened in Moscow. and distribution center.
