History of GMC

In 1902, the Grabowski brothers opened a company in Detroit producing trucks with single-cylinder engines. Gradually, a concern was organized, absorbing smaller and dependent automobile enterprises. The first to enter the new structure was the Grabowski company, as well as the Reliance Motor Car Company. At first, the concern produced trucks. So, during the First World War, GMC produced army trucks - more than 10 thousand of these vehicles went to the needs of American soldiers.

In 1916, trucks covered the route from Seattle to New York in 30 days, making a road rally throughout the United States.

After the First World War, the concern was modernized, and the model range of cars it produced also underwent changes. In 1925, The Yellow Cab Manufacturing company became part of GMC, after which the concern acquired its own logo and shifted its focus to the production of car models of various carrying capacities.

In 1931, the world saw the T-95 8-Series truck, equipped with a four-speed gearbox and a pneumatic braking system. And three years later, a truck appeared for the first time, the engine of which was located above the cab. Over time, the design of GMC vehicles became less angular, and the number of color options for trucks grew. General Motors Company in World War II.

During the difficult war years, GMC began producing equipment required by the US government. These were military trucks, as well as equipment for submarines.

Popular models in the 1950s were trucks called "Jimmys" that ran on diesel fuel. In 1956, the concern presented to the world the first truck with all-wheel drive - 4WD. Ten years later, in 1966, the Rally minibus was born, which, without modifications, enjoyed considerable success on the market over the next 30 years. Significant restyling of this wonderful model occurred only in 1996, and then in 2003.

From 1968 to 1987, GMC factories produced another successful model - a truck with the Astro-95 index, the engine of which was again located above the cab.

Since 1988, the General Motors concern became part of Volvo-White, an enterprise specializing in the production of trucks. Together they managed to create a new brand of trucks called “New Family”.

In 1991, the full-size Yukon SUV, created by GMC, appeared on the market, which was a good seller in the domestic market due to its convenience, reliability and beautiful design. During the same period, the production of Jimmy series SUVs was launched, which rolled off the assembly line until 2008. The VIP version of Jimmy was called Syclone. And the 2001 GMC Envoy received the venerable title of “Best SUV of the Year.”

At the turn of the century, the concern, alas, found itself on the verge of ruin. The situation was saved by the company's financing from the US government; the company's shares were divided between major GM creditors, the governments of the US and Canada, and the Auto Workers Union of America.

As a result, a new company, General Motors Company, was established in 2009. The concern still includes promising divisions, such as Opel, Chevrolet, and Cadillac.

In 2007, a sports car from GMC called Acadia was released. Car enthusiasts appreciated the modern design, comfortable interior of the new car and practical 3.6-liter engine. Another step forward for the company was the release in 2009 of the powerful GMC Terrain crossover, based on the Chevrolet Equinox model.

So, General Motors Company may not be what it used to be. But time requires new ideas and new technologies, which the famous American company continues to implement, because the crisis is behind us!
