History of Geo

Geo is a former division of GM that was under Chevrolet. The American company focused on producing functional and inexpensive passenger cars intended for sale on the US market. Geo's headquarters were located in Detroit, Michigan.

Development of the Geo brand Geo was founded in 1989. The decision to create a new brand was facilitated by the conclusion of a cooperation agreement between GM and the Japanese firms Toyota and Suzuki and the desire of the management of General Motors to compete with foreign companies supplying inexpensive compact cars to the American car market.

Becoming Geo Geo began its activities aimed at developing and manufacturing cars with the opening of two factories: CAMI in Canada (together with Suzuki) and NUMMI in California (together with Toyota). The CAMI plant produced the popular Tracker models, based on the Suzuki Vitara, and the Metro, based on the Suzuki Swift, and the Prizm sedan was produced at the NUMMI production facilities.

The vast majority of products released under the Geo brand were sold through the Chevrolet sales network. In the early stages, cars produced by the American manufacturer were in high demand: the company managed to sell at least 300 thousand copies every year.

Elimination of the Geo brand In the mid-90s, a significant decrease in demand for Geo products was recorded. In 1997, the right to produce all brand models was transferred to Chevrolet, and the American automaker ceased to exist.
