History of Geely

Geely's country of origin is China. The name of the brand translates as “happiness”. Gili cars regularly win 5 stars in independent crash tests, and the company itself is among the 500 largest in the world according to the American business magazine Fortune. But the founder of the brand, Li Shufu, did not immediately start producing cars.

The history of the Geely brand began in 1984, when businessman Li Shufu founded a company producing refrigerators and their components. But after 5 years, the Chinese authorities obliged entrepreneurs to obtain a license to manufacture refrigerators. Therefore, Li Shufu decided to produce materials for construction and decoration.

In 1992, the company began producing budget motorcycles and scooters and signed a partnership agreement with Honda. And in 1998, the first Geely brand car appeared on the market - the Haoqing SRV hatchback, from which car production began. In 2001, Li Shufu became the first private owner to receive a license to produce cars. The Geely car brand has appealed to consumers due to its affordable cost and low fuel consumption. In the first half of 2003, Li Shufu produced 34 thousand cars and delivered the first batch abroad.

In 2008, the company began producing biofuel cars, and a year later began producing electric cars. Soon, the automaker entered into an agreement with Yulon Group and began working together on electric vehicles. In 2010, the company bought Volvo Cars for two billion dollars and introduced three sub-brands in Beijing - Gleagle, Emgrand and Englon. But after 4 years, Li Shufu decided to promote the brand and abandoned sub-brands.

The company began supplying all models under the Geely brand. In 2014, the brand introduced hybrid cars with a gasoline engine and an auxiliary electric motor.
