History of FAW

FAW is China's first automobile corporation. This is also evidenced by the decoding of the brand name – First Automotive Works. How did the oldest automobile brand from the Middle Kingdom begin its journey and what has it achieved during its existence? Let's dive into the entertaining history of FAW.

The Chinese government approved a construction plan in the border city of Changchun, and 4 years later, the first automobile plant in the PRC began operation.

The first car in the history of the FAV to roll off the production line was the Jiefang, a complete analogue of the ZIS-150 truck. At the end of the 50s, they launched production of Jiefang CA-30 trucks, better known as ZIL-157. Next came the medium-duty trucks CA-140 and CA-141. Subsequently, trucks will become the main activity of the plant.

A few years after its opening, the plant began producing passenger cars in parallel with trucks. The Hongqi CA72 government limousine was produced in a limited quantity of 202 units. The prototype for the limousine was our Chaika GAZ-13, but the engine copied the power unit of the American Chrysler. In 1958, the Hongqi convertible was introduced. From the 1960s until the late 1990s, the Hongqi CA770 model was produced, which resembled the Soviet Volga GAZ-21. In 1989, the concern introduced the Hongqi CA7180 - nothing more than a Chinese interpretation of the Audi 100. And there are many such examples in the history of the FAW company. The car brand was born as a result of international cooperation, which is why this practice is carried out to this day. Joint projects and ventures have been created with the largest players in the automotive market: Volkswagen, General Motors, Mazda, Toyota, Ford and Lincoln.

In the mid-2000s, the first Chinese automobile plant already included 22 enterprises in Jilin province. This made automobile manufacturing a major industry in the history of this region.

Over its 70-year history, First Automotive Works has become China's largest automaker. Based on the results of recent years, the company sells over 3 million cars annually, but for 2023 FAV has special goals: selling more than 4 million cars.

The pioneering concern, which occupies a leading position in the Chinese automobile market, does not stop there and is persistently introducing itself into international markets. The brand has 28 subsidiaries, currently has representative offices in 40 countries, and a distribution network covers more than 80 countries.

The automaker presents its latest developments at international motor shows, presenting modern electric vehicles and premium cars to the world. The appearance and equipment of the machines correspond to the latest trends and safety requirements.

At the moment, the company produces a wide range of equipment: trucks of three types of carrying capacity, cars, buses, SUVs. And that is not all. FAW special equipment deserves special attention: tractors, dump trucks, truck cranes and even concrete mixers. Commercial equipment is in demand in various business sectors.

The vehicles are sold under both the FAW brand and its own subsidiary brands Jiaxing, Bestune (Besturn), Haima, Junpai and Hongqi. This provides a huge selection of models in both the budget and premium price segments. In international markets, cars primarily compete with their fellow countrymen. The competitive struggle between Chinese automakers forces them to improve quality and equipment.

FAW continues to write history: it is one of the ten most important companies in China, opens bases for scientific and technological innovation and commissions highly intelligent factory facilities, expands its geographic presence, and is engaged in charitable activities.
