History of Dodge

The Dodge brothers started their business in 1900 by producing parts for other automobile companies, and it was only in 1914 that they decided to assemble their own cars at a plant in Hamtramck (Michigan). After their deaths in 1920, the company declined and was acquired in 1928 by Walter Chrysler, founder of the Chrysler Corporation. As part of this empire, the Dodge brand occupied a price niche between the budget Plymouth brand and the more prestigious DeSoto. Dodge's main products were mid-priced passenger cars and light-duty trucks. Until the mid-50s. they did not stand out much from the crowd until the full-size models of the "Forward Look" generation appeared, developed under the leadership of Virgil Exner. Since 1953, Dodge has been equipped with V8 engines and automatic transmissions.

In 1960, Dodge was separated from other Chrysler divisions and released the budget model Dart, which later became a compact car. This led to internal competition with Plymouth, as a result of which the cars of these brands began to duplicate each other. In the 2nd half of the 60s. The legendary muscle cars Dodge Charger, Dodge Coronet and Dodge Challenger were created, forming the elite sports club "Scat Pack". The fastest among them were the R/T (Road/Track) modifications with a 7-liter Hemi V8 engine producing 425 hp. But the tightening of environmental legislation and the oil crisis that occurred in 1973 destroyed this market segment. By the beginning of the 80s. Traditional full-size models also disappeared, giving way to front-wheel drive “compact” K-Cars.

A new era in Dodge history began in 1992 with the release of the second generation of the popular Dodge Ram pickup truck and the Dodge Viper two-seat sports car, equipped with an 8-liter V10 engine. During the years the brand was part of the DaimlerChrysler concern (1998-2007), modern versions of the iconic models of the 60s were developed: the Dodge Charger sedan and the Dodge Challenger coupe. They occupy a central place in the Dodge production program today. Since 2014, Dodge has been part of the international corporation Fiat Chrysler Automobiles .
