History of Barkas

The technical basis for the creation of an automobile enterprise in eastern Germany in 1957 was one of the nationalized factories that was part of the Framo company. Previously, vehicles for transporting small loads were assembled at the plant, located in Karl-Marx-Stadt. The new plant, having “inherited” the appropriate equipment, began producing the same light-duty vehicles, vans and minibuses.

The preparatory work took several years, so the first products of the plant appeared only in 1961. Then, on July 14, 1961, the assembly line produced a Barkas car.

Barkas had no competitors, but there were government orders and good demand in the countries of the socialist camp. For this reason, for three decades, the Barkas B1000 model was produced almost in its original form.

Small technical changes do not count. A serious update took place in 1989, when a front-wheel drive car was equipped with an engine from its western neighbor, Volkswagen. Together with a more powerful engine, the car received an additional number in the marking. From that time on it was called “Barkas B1000/1”. The exterior of the truck remains the same.

The unification of the two Germanys led to the end of production of the Longboat. He could not compete with more powerful and better technically equipped cars.

And yet, those 200,000 cars that the plant assembled over the years of its existence traveled on the roads of Europe for a long time. Even today, after so many years, you can still find this small but hardy truck in some places.
