History of Austin

Austin is the largest English car manufacturer. Throughout the 20th century, the Austin company produced many different models and modifications of its cars, but the most famous among them was the Austin Mini. The history of the Austin company began in 1906. Its founder was Sir Herbert Austin, after whom the company was named. The first cars under the Austin brand were assembled in the city of Longbridge in the workshops of an old printing house.

Back in 1905, the designer presented a project for a new car, and already in April 1906 - the Austin 25/30 HP car itself. The classic, representative model was equipped with a 4-cylinder engine. The cylinders were manufactured in separate blocks with side camshafts. The Austin 25/30 HP gained a good reputation and popularity, which was also enjoyed by subsequent pre-war Austin models. Over time, Austin offered a range of cars equipped with 4-cylinder engines ranging from 10-40 horsepower. Then a car with a 6-cylinder engine of 50 horsepower appeared. And in 1908, two Austin cars took part in the French Grand Prix competition.

In 1980, the Maxi-2 car was released, equipped with a 1.75-liter engine. The power of this power unit was 92 horsepower. At the same time, the Mini model was also modified, on the basis of which a car called Metro was made with a much more modern body. The engines that were installed on the Metro car had a displacement of almost 1 and 1.3 liters. In 1983, the Maestro car was released, having a two-volume body. And in 1984, the Montego model appeared, equipped with a three-volume body.

It is worth noting that the same chassis was installed on the Maestro and Montego cars. The engine volumes of these models varied from 1.3 to 2 liters, and power - from 65 to 113 horsepower. In 1984, the seemingly powerful Austin-Rover concern was created, but in 1988 the British Aerospace company bought out the automobile corporation and until 1989 also produced Austin-Rover cars. However, soon the brand of cars produced was named Rover. This is how the fairly popular Rover Mini car, which the concern inherited from the Austin company, is still produced.
