Alfa Romeo is an Italian automobile corporation headquartered in Milan, specializing in the production of sports cars and other vehicles. Initially it was called SAID - Società Anonima Italiana Darracq.
The origin of the company dates back to 1906, when Alexandre Darrakk, a former automotive engineer (originally from France), founded the SAID company, doing this with the support of Italian investors, one of them - Hugo Stella - was an influential aristocrat, and after 3 years he became the chairman of the company .
The company was founded in Naples, but later they decided to build the plant in Milan. For the construction of the factory, a plot of 6,700 m² was purchased in the suburbs of the capital of Lombardy - the town of Portello. However, the cars of this company sold very slowly, which prompted Hugo Stella to found his own company - Anonima Lombarda Fabbrica Automobili. However, the company A.L.F.A. began its activities. still in collaboration with SAID.
As for the ornate emblem, it was invented as a combination of a red cross on a white field, which personified success and enterprise (there is also reason to attribute that cross to the memory of the Crusaders), and also a snake that swallows a person. The snake is the coat of arms of the Visconti family, which previously owned all of Lombardy.
In general, Alfa Romeo initially set out to produce powerful, fast and reliable cars. And to confirm this status, the company’s models almost immediately began to take part in prestigious races. They were piloted by Ronzoni and Francini.
In 2000, the corporation celebrated its 90th anniversary. In 2001, new developments were demonstrated. They became the Alfa Romeo Sportwagon GTA models, along with the 156 GTA. In the same year, Alfa Romeo 147 received two prestigious awards at once - the title of “Car of the Year” and “Golden Steering Wheel” from the German publication Bild am Sonntag.
In 2003, the company introduced a number of new products. At the Bologna Motor Show, the world saw the new Alfa Romeo GT, with a body that was designed in collaboration with Bertone. In Frankfurt, the company presented the 8C Competizione concept to the public. And at the Geneva Motor Show, the Alfa Romeo Centro Stile Kamal was shown to the world - another concept.
And in 2004, the company not only introduced the Alfa Crosswagon model, equipped with permanent all-wheel drive, but also celebrated the 50th anniversary of its first mass-produced model, the Giulietta. After 2 years, the Spider version received the title “Convertible of the Year 2006”.
Alfa Romeo is a modern and dynamically developing automobile corporation. Her models are still distinguished by their swiftness, grace and nobility. It is not for nothing that the world famous Formula 1 racers - Michael Schumacher and Kimi Raikonen - chose this brand for everyday driving. The first one bought an Alfa 159 and a Sportwagon GTA, and the second one preferred the Brera sports coupe, recognized as “The most beautiful car in the world”!
